The Land Group participates in regenerative grazing workshop with Pablo Etcheberry in Montemor, Alentejo

On Friday, May 5th, we had the pleasure of participating in an engaging, day-long workshop about regenerative grazing. The event took place at a picturesque "Herdade" located near Montemor, in Portugal's idyllic Alentejo region.

Our host for the day was Pablo Etcheberry, an Argentine expert who is widely recognised as one of South America's leading authorities in the field of regenerative grazing. Pablo shared a wealth of insights and demonstrated his profound expertise on the benefits and intricacies of regenerative grazing. He elucidated the differences between a highly efficient, intensive, non-selective cattle grazing system and the comparatively less efficient, intensive, selective model that is traditionally adopted in conventional cattle operations.

During the workshop, Pablo touched upon various facets of regenerative grazing. This included essential elements like paddock design and fencing, pasture and water management, as well as understanding and harnessing cattle behaviour. Throughout the day, he underscored the critical importance of implementing quick grazing rotations in small paddocks. This strategy, he explained, maximises the load factor per hectare (the primary driver of return), while allowing adequate recovery time for pastures. Such an approach is crucial in establishing and maintaining a sustainable, profitable cattle operation.

The workshop concluded on a high note with a delightful lunch featuring traditional Alentejana cuisine. After lunch, we did a short field trip, where we had the opportunity to witness first-hand some of the regenerative grazing techniques expounded by Pablo. One of the highlights of this trip was watching a cattle herd being skilfully moved from a recently grazed paddock to a fresh one. This real-world demonstration served as an invaluable example of the concepts discussed during the workshop.

This day left us inspired and eager to continue implementing regenerative grazing principles within our own cattle operations in Uruguay.
