Our sustainable agriculture internship programme at Estancia Villa Lucero
Our sustainable agriculture internship programme at Estancia Villa Lucero
13 July 2023
We recently kicked-off our sustainable agriculture internship programme in Uruguay by inviting two students at IE University to stay and work with our team at Estancia Villa Lucero, our 9,000 hectares flagship property that produces sustainably reared grass-fed beef cattle, rainfed row crops, rice, and timber.
Alexandre and Joaquín brought a refreshing amount of curiosity, enthusiasm, proactivity, and dedication to their internships. They exhibited commitment and responsibility throughout the challenging activities they performed under the watchful eye of our farm manager Nicolás García and his team.
Assessing the property’s existing business model, exploring growth and diversification opportunities, and conducting regular inspections of various productive areas and premises allowed Alexandre and Joaquín to develop an in-depth understanding of sustainable farm management and our operations.
Their engagement with livestock, often on horseback, was particularly impressive, whether it was setting up and dismantling pastures; relocating cattle; examining and assessing bulls; performing the farm's comprehensive quarterly headcount; and documenting and coordinating transport (including loading 370 young steers).
They also displayed a willingness to get involved in housekeeping chores. From mowing the lawn, trimming palm trees, gathering firewood to running errands, they left no task untouched, exhibiting the same degree of commitment and responsibility throughout their stay.
Their intellectual curiosity was also evident in discussions with Nicolas and his team, and our Senior Advisor, Edgardo Cardozo. They both demonstrated a deep interest in subjects from the future of agriculture in Uruguay to the country's competitive positioning among neighbouring nations.
Alexandre and Joaquín have gained valuable insights into the practical aspects of sustainable farm management, regenerative cattle grazing, and agricultural dynamics. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to both for their hard work during their time with us and wish them every success in their future endeavours.
